Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Become a CFP® Professional

Sam Silberstein, CFP®, CFA®, EA | Content Lead, Dalton Education|Dec 15, 2025

The demand for financial planning is exploding.

People are realizing they need real, trustworthy guidance, not just investment tips from TikTok. And with the growth we’re expected to see in this industry, a talent crisis is looming: By 2034, wealth management firms could be about 100,000 financial advisors short of the number needed to meet customer demand.1

The opportunity is there. Will you be ready to fill one of the thousands of financial planning jobs opening up every year over the next decade?2

And while demand is an important consideration, here’s what statistics don’t tell you: what it actually feels like to do this work. What it means to build a career in which you can help people navigate the messiest, most vulnerable moments of their lives — and get paid well to do it.

If you’ve ever thought about turning your love for personal finance into a real, purpose-driven career helping others, this is your sign.

I’m giving you three reasons why right now is the perfect time to pursue your CFP® certification and launch a career in financial planning. And believe me, these reasons go beyond just filling a talent gap.

Reason #1: The demand is exploding — and so are your career options

When I first heard the title “CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™,” I pictured a 9-to-5 sales job with suits and cold calls. I’ve learned it’s so much more than that.

This career’s taken me everywhere, from big firms to boutique RIAs to startups. Even to Dalton Education, where I have the pleasure of teaching future planners. And that’s what I love the most — being a CFP® professional gives you options.

You can pivot, specialize, grow, and find out what truly fits you. Want to work with tech executives going through IPOs? There’s a path for that. Passionate about helping teachers and nonprofit workers? You can build a practice around that. Want the stability of a large firm or the entrepreneurial freedom of running your own RIA? Both doors are open.

If you’re someone who loves helping people and geeks out on this stuff, just like I do, trust me, there’s a place for you in this profession — especially with the opportunity now and into the future.

Reason #2: You’re not just managing money — you’re empowering people

In my opinion, one of the best parts about being a CFP® professional is giving people the tools to empower themselves.

Because real empowerment doesn’t come from someone handing you a quick fix. It comes from understanding how the pieces actually work together.

When I work with clients or teach students, my goal isn’t to sound impressive. It’s to help. I want them to walk away thinking, “Okay, I can do this.” Whether it’s showing how taxes affect their investments or helping them build a plan that actually fits their life, it’s about turning information into confidence.

As CFP® professionals, we don’t just tell people what to do. We’re teaching them how to think about money differently. And once they have those tools, they don’t just feel empowered — they are empowered.

Honestly, that’s the best part of this career: watching people go from overwhelmed to confident and knowing you gave them the tools to stay that way. No algorithm or robo-advisor can replicate that human connection and personalized guidance — and people are realizing that more and more.

Reason #3: This is deeply human, meaningful work

Here’s what no one tells you about being a CFP® professional: you don’t just manage money. You become the person people turn to when they’re terrified, confused, or facing the biggest decision of their lives.

I’ve sat with clients who have just lost a spouse and have no idea how to move forward financially. I’ve helped someone figure out if they can afford to leave a toxic job. I’ve walked families through disability planning, unexpected windfalls, divorce — you know, the messy, complicated, deeply human stuff that doesn’t fit into a neat spreadsheet.

People need someone they can turn to for those what-ifs:

  • What if I lose my job?
  • What if I get sick?
  • What if my parents need care?
  • What if I want to start over?

As a CFP® professional, you’re expected to put their needs first. You’re that steady voice in the room when everything else feels uncertain. And that level of trust? It’s sacred.

And yeah, of course you can make a good living doing this work. CFP® professionals earn 13% more than other financial planners and report high satisfaction across career stability, work-life balance, and advancement opportunities.3

But the real value, at the end of the day? Knowing that you helped someone sleep better at night because they finally have a plan. That sense of security you provide. That’s what really fulfills you.

So if you’re someone who genuinely cares about people and wants to do work that matters, this career will fill you up in ways you never expected.

Ready to take the first step?

If you’ve been sitting on the idea — maybe you love personal finance, maybe you’ve been helping friends with their money questions, maybe you just want work that means something — consider this your nudge.

There’s a real demand for planners who care, who listen, who want to help people make sense of their money. The profession needs more voices like yours.

And that’s where Dalton Education comes in. We’ve helped more than half of all practicing CFP® professionals earn their certification. People just like you, who decided to take that first step.

Because the truth is, someone out there is waiting for you to help them feel confident about their future. And you might be closer to that career than you think.
