The Certified Military Financial Advisor® renewal and CE completion period has been extended to January 1, 2026 and will be extended for this first year only. On Jan 2, 2026, the late recertification fee goes into effect. We will resume our standard renewal and CE completion window of August 1 - October 1 in 2026.

Submit your 7 Certified Military Financial Advisor® CE Hours

Advisors with the Certified Military Financial Advisor® certification are required to complete eight hours of CE every two years. Seven of those hours can be completed by Dalton-approved continuing education from other sources. The last CE hour is a required course provided by Dalton Education that is included with the renewal fee.

CMFA™ CE Renewal Timeframe and Requirements

CE Cycle and Renewal Window

  • Renewal Cycle: Every two (2) years from certification completion date
  • Annual Renewal Window: August 1st - October 1st
  • Renewal Fee: $100 (includes access to the required Dalton Education CE course)
  • $150 for submissions submitted after the renewal window

Renewal Window Timeline

  • Two years post-certification: Certified Military Financial Advisor® certificants must complete their first renewal during the August 1st - October 1st window following their two-year anniversary
  • Subsequent renewals: Every two years thereafter during the same annual window
  • Example 1: Complete Certified Military Financial Advisor® on January 15, 2025, → First renewal due August 1- October 1, 2027
  • Example 2: Complete Certified Military Financial Advisor® on October 25, 2025, → First renewal due August 1- October 1, 2028

Total Hours Required

8 CE hours every two years consisting of:

  • 1 hour: Required course from Dalton Education (provided at no additional cost with renewal fee)
  • 7 hours: Approved continuing education from other sources

Required Dalton Education Course (1 Hour)

  • Purpose: Updates on military benefits changes, new regulations, and program enhancements since last renewal
  • Format: Online, self-paced course
  • Content: “What’s New Since Your Program or Last Renewal” - military-specific updates
  • Availability: Multiple course options available starting August 1st annually
  • Cost: Included with $100 renewal fee

Approved CE Sources (7 Hours)

Certified Military Financial Advisor® certificants may earn the remaining 7 hours through any of the following approved activities:

1. Educational Programs

  • CFP Board-approved CE programs
  • Professional licensing CE (insurance, securities, etc.)
  • Accredited university courses related to financial planning or military affairs
  • Professional association conferences and seminars
  • Webinars and online learning programs

2. Teaching and Instruction

  • Teaching courses related to financial planning or military benefits
  • Conducting workshops or seminars for military families
  • Presenting at professional conferences
  • Calculation: 1 hour of CE credit for every 1 hour of instruction (maximum 4 hours per renewal period)

3. Professional Writing

  • Articles published in professional journals or publications
  • Military financial planning research papers
  • Educational blog posts on military financial topics
  • Calculation: 2 hours of CE credit per published article (maximum 2 hours per renewal period)

4. Professional Development

  • Attending military benefits training sessions
  • Participating in study groups focused on military financial planning
  • Calculation: 1 hour of CE credit for every 1 hour of participation

Subject Matter Requirements

At least 6 of the 8 total CE hours must be directly related to:

  • Financial counseling, communication, and client psychology
  • Cash flow management, budgeting, savings, and spending strategies
  • Debt management and credit use strategies
  • Risk management, insurance planning, and protection strategies
  • Investment planning, asset management, and portfolio design
  • Tax principles, tax planning, and compliance considerations
  • Retirement savings, income distribution, and Social Security planning
  • Estate planning, wills, trusts, and property transfer strategies
  • General financial planning principles and client goal alignment

Military Deployment

Active duty military personnel deployed during the renewal window may request a 6-month extension with proper documentation from their command.

Hardship Extensions

Extensions may be granted for documented medical emergencies or other extraordinary circumstances at the discretion of Dalton Education.

  • Professional licensing organizations
  • Military education programs
  • CFP Board-approved providers
  • Professional financial planning associations
  • Government agencies (DoD, VA, etc.)
  • Training organizations and financial industry businesses who provided training and education on the subject matter requirements

CE Educational Program Requirements

CE programs must:

  • Have clear learning objectives
  • Include methods to verify attendance/completion
  • Provide certificates or documentation of completion
  • Be conducted by qualified instructors
  • Maintain attendance records

Dalton Education reserves the right to update these CE requirements periodically. Certified Military Financial Advisor® certificants are responsible for staying informed of the most current requirements.
