    What are the Requirements to be a CFP® professional?

    In order to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, there are a few requirements applicants will need. Here are the requirements for how to become a CFP® professional in four steps:

    The experience requirement mandates individuals to have earned a certain number of hours of experience related to the financial planning process and working with clients directly. There are two ways fulfill the experience requirement:

    • Three years (6,000 hours) of full-time professional experience

    • Two years (4,000 hours) in an apprenticeship


    The experience can be earned 10 years before the CFP® exam or five years after passing the exam.
